Boston-Atlantic City Roundtrip Airplane Race is held.

May 16, 1919

Somerville resident Ralph Hodgdon is the winner, completing the trip from the Saugus Airfield in 3 hours and 55 minutes. When one of the competitors fails to finish the race and his plane goes missing over the Atlantic Ocean, Hodgdon donates his $1,000 prize money to the pilot’s widow and accepts the second place prize of $500 instead.
